Multiattribute Auctions in Electronic Procurement

of doctoral dissertation accepted by the School of Economics and Business Engineering (http://www.wiwi.uni-karlsruhe.de) Universität Karlsruhe (TH), Germany (http://www.uni-karlsruhe.de) Date of defense: June 23, 2004 Multiattribute auctions provide a buyer with “the ability to retain flexibility during negotiation, and to express tradeoffs across different outcomes without making an up-front commitment to a particular combination of attributes” (Sunderam & Parkes 2002), since the final characteristics of the item, as well as its price, are determined dynamically through suppliers’ bids (Parkes & Kalagnanam 2002). On the other hand, multiattribute auctions allow suppliers to differentiate in the auction process and to bid on their competitive advantages, e. g. offer a faster delivery if production capacity is available (Wise & Morrison 2000). Applying multiattribute auctions to request for quotes (RFQ) procurement processes is expected to lead to a substantial monetary impact for both the buying organization and the participating suppliers (Beil & Wein 2003): Multiattribute auctions render it possible to negotiate integratively, i.e., they allow bidders to submit bids which make both the buyer and the bidding supplier better off (create a win-win situation), whereas price auctions are strictly distributive, i. e., the supplier can only make himself better off at the expense of the buyer (a win-lose situation) and vice versa. By enabling integrative negotiation moves, multiattribute auctions can create and capture value “left on the table” in price auctions (Kersten, Noronha & Teich 1999). Multiattribute auctions thus hold the potential to increase the overall value of a trade compared to price auctions and to increase the process efficiency relative to manual RFQ processes, e. g., by decreasing administrative and process cost (Koppius 2002; Teich, Wallenius, Wallenius & Koppius 2003). Multiattribute auctions have received attention in business practice, been subject to speculation in industry publications and are an active research area in several scientific fields.

Multi-attribute auctions for electronic procurement
Auctions are a fundamental mechanism to automate negotiations in electronic commerce. We consider a class of multi-lateral negotiation situations, which requires negotiation on multiple attributes of a deal. These situations are typical for corporate procurement. Current auction implementations do not support these negotiations adequately. In the paper we propose multi-attribute auctions, an ec...
متن کاملNegotiation and Auction Mechanisms in E-procurement: Systems and Experiments
Auctions and negotiations are mechanisms used in market exchanges. Behavioral economics experiments focused on the mechanism efficiency which required highly simplified problems and contexts. This paper discusses an on-going project involving an experimental comparison of auction and negotiation mechanisms embedded in software which we have developed. The experiments are situated in an e-busine...
متن کاملDesigning Reverse Auctions for B-2-B Procurement - Evidence from the German Industry
At the end of the 1990s online reverse auctions were proposed as a powerful tool to improve the performance of corporate procurement. However, as many of the promises of the e-Business world failed to materialize the issue received only little attention during the last years. Hence, it is not known what kind of role reverse auctions play and what kind of auction designs are used in practice. Fo...
متن کاملPreference Representation for Multi-Unit Multiattribute Auctions
The problem of multi-unit multiattribute trading, though useful in practical procurement settings, has been rarely addressed in auction literature. We present a general framework to structure specifications of preferences over multi-unit multiattribute outcomes, allowing flexible tradeoffs between expressiveness and compactness of representation. Next, we use this framework to propose an auctio...
متن کاملMultiattribute electronic procurement using goal programming
One of the key challenges of current day electronic procurement systems is to enable procurement decisions transcend beyond a single attribute such as cost. Consequently, multiattribute procurement have emerged as an important research direction. In this paper, we develop a multiattribute e-procurement system for procuring large volume of a single item. Our system is motivated by an industrial ...
